Verification

Each year, a percentage of all students who apply for federal student aid are selected for verification by The Department of Education. It could mean you made an error on your FAFSA or you could be selected at random. Regardless, we can not produce an offer letter until we verify your file.

If your FAFSA is selected for verification, you will be notified and asked to return several required documents to our office which may include:

  • the Verification Worksheet - please answer all questions
  • a Tax Return Transcript for your parent(s) (do not send a tax account transcript) or a physically signed copy of their 1040 Tax Return with Schedules 1, 2, 3 (if applicable)
  • a Tax Return Transcript for yourself (do not send a tax account transcript) or a physically signed copy of your 1040 Tax Return with Schedules 1, 2, 3 (if applicable)

In order to request a Tax Return Transcript, you must visit www.IRS.gov and follow the prompts for online or by mail. If requesting by mail, the IRS will prepare and send your transcript via mail, as long as it has been longer than 2 weeks since you filed your taxes. Tax Return Transcripts are available instantly in your online account.

Students will recieve an email if additional documentation is required. Students will also recieve an email from our office once their offer letter is ready to view in their MY.IllinoisState.edu portal.
